The Wait is Over!

Lay's had a great idea when they decided to create a contest people could finally get excited about: Do Us A Flavor. For those of you that haven't heard, Lay's allowed potato chip fans to share their ideas for new flavors last year. You could submit all your flavor ideas through Facebook. After millions of entries, Lay's finally announced the big finalists.

The three finalists are Cheesy Garlic Bread submitted by Karen Weber-Mendham, Chicken & Waffles by Christina Abu-Judom, and Sriracha by Tyler Raineri. Naturally these picks caused quite a stir in the junk food loving community. After all, there must be someone else out there that craves bologna and cheese chips or chocolate and marshmallow chips? (I thought my ideas were wonderful!) Nonetheless, the finalists have been picked and their entries certainly deserve everyone's consideration.

Never before have I heard of so much excitement over potato chip flavors, but plenty of people went on major quests to find these chips. After all, with so much time and energy invested in the contest (yes, clicking a few buttons on Facebook was a real effort for me!), I wanted to finish out my Do Us A Flavor contest journey. At this time, not all grocery stores have all flavors, but Target is steady getting in shipments, and Walgreen's is rumored to have two flavors. Food Lion seems to be the clear winner in the "Which Store Can Stock the Lay's Do Us a Flavor Contest Finalists Faster" challenge. Go you, Food Lion!

Now that my dream of trying all the potato chip flavors has become a reality, I can share this very important information with you. Yes, it is time to review the Lay's Do Us A Flavor finalist chips!

Sriracha

I am going to review the Sriracha chips first because these chips are the most popular amongst my friends and co-workers. The Sriracha chips are the only spicy chips that made it as a finalist. Although they are tasty, I personally find them to be a bit sour.

For those of you that enjoy spicy and sour flavored food, you are going to like these potato chips. And trust me, you are not alone. Just about everyone I've talked to about the Do Us A Flavor finalists, enjoys the Sriracha the best. In my opinion, we have enough spicy chip options out there, but this is still a good chip.

Cheesy Garlic Bread

I never thought I would say this, but it is possible to have too much cheese on your junk food. I was pretty excited about the Cheesy Garlic Bread flavor, and I also found that one to be the most flavor difficult to acquire. However, I have to say this one is just too strong with some really smelly cheese. It nearly knocks you out when you open the bag.

If you love strong cheese and garlic, you might really enjoy these chips. If you like having fresh breath, these chips are not for you. It is a great idea and I feel perhaps Lay's could have done it justice by making the cheese a bit less strong.

Chicken & Waffles

When I heard one of the finalists was Chicken & Waffles, I will be the first to admit I thought there was no way someone could make this work. I was quite a skeptic and maybe even stated something negative like, "Oh, how ridiculous!" Well, turns out I am the ridiculous one because I firmly believe Chicken & Waffles is the winner (if only in my own head).

The Chicken & Waffles chips are like a party in your mouth. Mind you, they are not for everyone! My boss and several co-workers think these chips are just "too weird," but I disagree. When I bite into a Chicken & Waffles chip, I can literally taste a wide assortment of flavors: syrup, chicken, and I could almost swear I taste a hint of stuffing! It is almost like a Thanksgiving meal in a bag of chips, except of course, it is chicken not turkey flavored.

If you are ready to think outside the box (or the bag) and you are prepared for an entirely new flavor experience, I highly recommend the Chicken & Waffles Lay's chips. At the very least, you can have the experience of trying out something new and unusual. After all, I'll bet you've never tried a Chicken & Waffles potato chip until now, have you? Mmmmm... enjoy!
