Your Pet Can't Talk, But I Can...

This might be difficult for you to hear, but your pet may hate you. I know! That is just such a terrible thing to say. What kind of person asserts such a thing? Sometimes I am forced to just simply be blunt. I keep it real. Yes, your pet might find you terribly annoying.

- Does Kitty run away from you when you try to cuddle?

- Does Fido get excited when the neighbors get home, but totally ignores you?

- Does Tweety quit chirping as soon as you enter the room?

- Has Toddlers the Turtle been learning to run so he can get away from you faster?

I hate to break this to you, but your pet seems to hold some sort of resentment towards you.

Don't worry! I am here to help you out. I would not just let you get bummed out about your pet hating you and then just let you suffer. Let me give you some examples of where you may be going wrong. If you do any of these things, you might want to rethink your behavior. If you change your habits, your pet will love you again!

Why am I wearing this?

Your Pets May Hate You Because:

-You insist on dressing up your pet even though he hates it. Can't you see he is suffering? No, Buffy does not want to dress like a cheerleader! Butch does not want to wear a football jersey; this is especially the case if you are not sure what team your dog likes. Stop trying to force him to wear that Dallas Cowboys jersey when clearly he is a Washington Redskins fan.

-You forgot to feed your goldfish three times last week. When they attempted to bite your finger, that was a hint!

-The stench from the hamster cage is so bad, the neighbors are complaining. Even worse, they live a block away from you. Clean that cage!

-When you call for your pet to come to you, you always forget her name. Her name is not Furry Animal in the Corner. Her name is also not "Hey you" or "Did you do this?" Her name is Fifi. Learn it.

-Much like a pouty teenager, your pet believes you just don't understand her. She really needs treats at least once an hour. You need to cuddle her all the time. Give her the constant attention she so desperately needs!

-Forcing your pets to pose for major holidays is probably OK. As a matter of fact, some pets prefer to be considered a member of the family. They want to pose in front of the Christmas tree. However, your pet does not need to celebrate every holiday. Your dog did not even realize there was an outfit for Grandparents Day, nor did he realize a photo shoot would be necessary.

-Mittens the Kitten is not a dog. Stop trying to get her to play fetch.

-You forgot your cockatiel's birthday again this year. Seriously, you've owned that bird for 10 years now. Remember her birthday and give her a new swing or something.

-Your rodents are nocturnal. They are like little vampires and attempting to make them sleep at night to keep the same schedule as you is just not fair. Allow them some time on the wheel, even if it squeaks.

-When you installed the new doggie door, you did not take into consideration the size of your dog. No, a Saint Bernard can not squeeze out of a doggie door meant for a toy poodle.

Stop forcing me to pose!

Your Pets Want to Love You

Much like a person that falls in love with a kidnapper, your pets want to love you. They are stuck with you all the time, so why don't you guys just try to get along? Your pet is there for you and will tolerate you when no human will. When you are on good terms with your pet, your little furry (or feathery) friend will think your jokes are funny when no one else does. Your pet will also not mind when your house is a little dirty or you decide to hang out in your pajamas all day.

It is not so difficult to win your pet over. You just need to take a few moments and think, "Is this annoying my pet and is it necessary?" If it is necessary, then you must do it. If it is not necessary, then why annoy your pet? Anything you are doing for your pet's own good is always a wonderful idea. Some day your pet might even understand that (although not likely). If all else fails, bribing your little buddy with a treat or toy might help. Just relax and have fun with little Fluffy, Buffy, and Puffy.
